“I am a published writer, book editor, educator, and writing coach. I’ve taught and critiqued nonfiction writing (since 2003) and have been self-employed as a memoir instructor (since 2012)."

About the Instructor

Kimberly enjoyed a social work career before getting an MFA in creative nonfiction in 2003. For 10 years, she taught composition and literature to undergraduates at Spalding University. She is sole proprietor of Shape & Flow Writing Instruction.

She has been published in The Louisville Literary Review, HerStry, 94 Creations, The Journal of the Council of Social Work Education, The New Southerner, Today’s Woman Magazine, The Louisville Anthology, The New Social Worker, Dorothy Parker’s Ashes, and others. Kim is working to finish a full draft of a memoir-in-essays, You’ll Thank Me for This Someday (and other parental cliches I tried to ignore).

Kim curates and edits her own Medium.com publication— Landslide Lit(erary), where she publishes both prose and poetry. All her writers are encouraged to submit!

Kim is the co-editor, with Bonnie Omer Johnson,  of the multi-genre literary anthology, The Boom Project: Voices of a Generation (Butler Books, 2019).  The editors curated and assembled this anthology of 47 writers. During COVID we interviewed our writers on our own YouTube channel.  Each conversation includes readings as well as a discussion of process and writing craft.

Client Testimonials

“As a result of Kim’s unparalleled skillset in both teaching and editing, I was able to obtain a literary agent and subsequently received an offer from a New York City publisher to publish my memoir.

I enlisted her services to assist me in the developmental and copy editing of my completed manuscript prior to submitting the final product to my editor. Kim’s keen eye and attention to detail helped me clarify the arc of my manuscript and streamline the final word count by cutting out paragraphs and chapters that did not add to the overall message I wanted to impart to the reader.

Kim’s edits are always specific and detailed. Her constructive criticism is supportive without judgment and encourages the writer to strengthen and improve her/his craft.”

~Kathy Stearman, author of It’s Not About the Gun: Lessons from My Global Career as a Female FBI Agent (Pegasus Books 2021)~

“Kim and I met face-to-face several times, and she checked in with me periodically to let me know her progress and to offer encouragement. I appreciated Kim’s open and supportive communication style. She also provided a tailored list of recommended reading, writing resource links, contests, and networking opportunities. It became clear to me that Kim was interested not only in performing her job well but also in cultivating me as a writer and helping me forge a path to success.”

Kim’s question prompts and gentle nudges challenged me to dig deeper. When I incorporated her suggestions, I saw immediate improvements to the manuscript. In fact, I don’t believe there is a section in the book that hasn’t been greatly enhanced by her keen eye and guiding hand.”
